The Highly Skilled Professional visa uses a points system across three tracks — Advanced Academic Research, Advanced Specialized/Technical, and Advanced Business Management — scoring applicants on factors like academic background, career history, annual salary, age, and Japanese-language ability. Score 70 points or more and you qualify; 80 or more unlocks additional perks.
The headline benefit is speed to permanent residency: instead of the standard 10-year wait, HSP holders scoring 70+ points can apply for PR after 3 years, and those scoring 80+ after just 1 year. Beyond that, HSP status comes with looser restrictions than ordinary work visas — more flexibility to take on secondary work activities, and preferential treatment for bringing family members and, in some cases, domestic staff.
Because eligibility is scored rather than fixed, it's worth running your own numbers against the official points table before assuming you qualify or don't — a strong salary can outweigh a shorter work history, for instance. The application otherwise follows the standard Certificate of Eligibility process, just with the points calculation and supporting evidence added on top.
