Visa and residency costs in Japan fall into two very different bands right now. Consular visa fees — what you pay at an embassy for a short-stay visa — have stayed relatively modest, with a July 2026 update setting single-entry visas at ¥15,000 and multiple-entry at ¥30,000 (or local-currency equivalents, with exemptions for some nationalities).
Domestic immigration fees are a different story. In March 2026 the Japanese Cabinet approved legislation raising the statutory caps on the fees charged for status-of-residence renewals, extensions, and permanent residency applications, in order to fund modernized screening systems including the upcoming JESTA program. The caps are moving toward roughly ¥100,000 for a change-of-status or extension application and roughly ¥300,000 for permanent residency — a significant jump from the token amounts these procedures used to cost. These are ceiling figures the government is phasing in, not necessarily what every applicant pays immediately, so budget conservatively and check current amounts before you file.
