Processing times are the single biggest planning variable in a Japan visa application, and they vary a lot by stage and category. Rough current benchmarks:
- Certificate of Eligibility (CoE): typically 1–3 months at the regional immigration bureau, though this stretches during busy periods (spring hiring season, start of academic terms) and for more complex categories like the Business Manager visa.
- Visa issuance at the embassy (with CoE in hand): usually 5–10 business days.
- Short-stay visas without a CoE: commonly a few business days to about two weeks, depending on the embassy and nationality.
- eVisa applications: often faster than paper applications for eligible nationalities, since there's no in-person embassy visit involved.
- Total timeline, work visa from a standing start: realistically 1.5 to 4 months from when your employer files the CoE application to when you're cleared to travel.
These are typical ranges, not guarantees — individual cases can run faster or considerably slower, particularly if the immigration bureau requests additional documents partway through review. If you have a fixed start date (a job start, a school term, a move-in date), build in buffer time and start the CoE process as early as your sponsor is able to file.
