Current visa and residency-related fees, by category:
Short-stay (Temporary Visitor) visas, consular fees as of July 2026:
- Single-entry: ¥15,000 (or local-currency equivalent)
- Multiple-entry: ¥30,000 (or local-currency equivalent)
- Some nationalities are exempt from consular fees under bilateral agreements — check with your nearest embassy.
eVisa applications: fees are generally comparable to paper visa fees for the same visa type, paid online at time of application.
Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) issuance: no fee is charged for the CoE itself — the cost shows up later, at the visa stamping stage and at renewal/PR stages.
Status of residence changes, extensions, and renewals: fees here are the ones affected by the 2026 legislative changes, with statutory caps moving toward roughly ¥100,000 for a change-of-status or extension application. Permanent Residency applications: fees are moving toward a cap of roughly ¥300,000, the largest single fee in the system and the one most worth budgeting for well ahead of applying.
